Can I move my Wix website to another host?
October 16, 2026 · 8 min read
Short answer: not as-is. Wix doesn't let a site leave its servers, so there's no export button for your design or your pages. What you can take is everything that makes it your business's site - your words, your photos, your logo, your web address and your email - and build the new site around them. For most small-business sites that's less work than it sounds, because the hard part was never the template. It was the content, and the content is yours.
Why there's no export button
Wix's help center is direct about it: a Wix site has to be hosted and operated on Wix's servers, and the way Wix is built doesn't support hosting it anywhere else. Your pages are put together in the visitor's browser by Wix's own code, so even a perfect copy of the page files would still need Wix to work. Wix's terms also keep its templates and its free media inside Wix. Content you uploaded yourself is excluded from that and stays yours.
So "moving a Wix site" is really two jobs: carrying your content out, and building a new site around it. The second job is also the chance to fix whatever you never liked about the first site - the menu nobody could find on a phone, the page that hasn't been true for three years.
What comes with you
- Your text. Every word you wrote is yours. Copy it out page by page into a document, and cut what's stale while you're there.
- Your photos and videos. In the Wix Media Manager you can download anything you uploaded, one file at a time or by selecting several in a folder and downloading them together. There's no single "download everything" button, so work through it folder by folder.
- Your logo. Ask whoever designed it for the original file. If that's lost, it's in your Media Manager uploads.
- Your web address. Your domain isn't part of the site. You can keep it registered exactly where it is and point it at the new host, or transfer it. You don't have to transfer it to move the website.
- Your contacts and form submissions. Both export to a CSV file from your Wix dashboard. The new site won't import that history, but you'll want it for your records. (Wix exports submission times in UTC, so they may look a few hours off.)
- Your product list, if you sell online. Wix exports store products as a CSV file, which most shop tools can read.
What stays behind
- The design and the code. Wix's templates and the code that runs them stay on Wix. Your new site gets a new design, so expect "rebuilt with my content," not "identical."
- Wix's free stock photos, and Shutterstock images bought through Wix. They're licensed for use on Wix only, and the Media Manager won't let you download them. Replace them, ideally with photos of your own work - here's why that matters more than it seems.
- Blog posts, as a batch. Wix has no tool for exporting blog posts to another platform. Copy over the posts worth keeping, along with their photos. For most local businesses that's a handful, not the whole archive.
- Wix Bookings. It can't move off Wix; Wix can't even move it between two Wix sites. Switch to a standalone scheduler such as Calendly, Square Appointments or Acuity, which works on any website, and set it up before you switch so no appointment falls through the gap.
- Store checkout, member logins and Wix apps. Orders, customer accounts and passwords don't come along. A small shop can link out to Square Online, a Shopify Buy Button or Stripe Payment Links instead.
- History. Your Wix analytics and the SEO settings in Wix's dashboard stay with Wix. Note anything you rely on before you go.
Don't break your email
This is the mistake that actually hurts. Your email almost never runs on your website - it runs on your domain's mail records (the MX records). Moving a website by "pointing" your domain at a new host changes only the records the website uses, and Wix's own help pages say email and verification records stay as they are. Leave every MX, SPF and DKIM record alone and your inbox won't notice the move.
Two cautions:
- Email you bought through Wix is its own subscription. If your Google Workspace (or another mailbox) is billed by Wix, cancelling your Wix site plan doesn't have to touch it - so don't cancel it along with the plan. If you want everything off Wix eventually, talk to Wix support about moving the billing straight to Google before you close anything.
- Test it after the switch. Send yourself an email from an outside account and reply to it. Two minutes, and you know.
The order to do it in
- Save everything first. Your text, photos, logo, contacts, form submissions, and a list of your page addresses. Open yoursite.com/sitemap.xml in a browser to see every page Wix published.
- Build the new site on its temporary address while Wix keeps running. Check every page on your phone and send a test through the contact form.
- Set up the replacements for anything that stays behind: a booking link, a shop link, the new contact form.
- Point your domain. If Wix is your domain host, disconnect the domain from your Wix site first, then go to Domains, Manage DNS Records and change two things: the A record (your bare domain) and the www record, to the values your new host gives you. Delete the old A records so they don't conflict. If your domain is registered somewhere else, such as GoDaddy, make the same two changes there. It can take up to 48 hours, often much less.
- Test. The site loads at your address with the padlock, a form you send arrives in your inbox, and email still goes both ways.
- Wait two weeks, then cancel the Wix site plan - only the plan. Your Wix site plan, your domain and any email you bought through Wix are separate subscriptions. Cancelling the plan doesn't cancel the others, and you shouldn't cancel them unless you've moved them. If your domain is registered at Wix, leave its renewal on.
Want the domain off Wix too? That's optional and can happen any time after the website moves. In your Wix account, open Domains and choose "Transfer away from Wix"; Wix emails an authorization code to the domain's owner contact, and you give that code to the new registrar. Domain rules block a transfer for 60 days after a domain is registered or last transferred, and after its owner contact details change - so if you plan to transfer, do it before you update those details.
Keep your Google ranking through the move
- Keeping the same domain does most of the work. Google, your Google Business Profile and every link anyone ever made to you keep pointing at the right address.
- Keep your main page addresses the same where you can (/services, /contact, /about). Wix blog posts live at addresses like /post/your-title; if you keep a post, keep its address or redirect the old one to the new page.
- Keep your business name, address and phone written exactly as they appear on your Google Business Profile.
- If you use Google Search Console, submit the new site's sitemap once the switch is done.
